koshas
The five koshas – the layers of being
In yoga philosophy, humans are understood to be multi-layered beings.
The koshas describe five levels or “sheaths” that permeate our being—from the gross physical level to the subtle essence of our consciousness.
Yoga works on all these levels and helps us develop a deeper understanding of ourselves.
Annamaya kosha – The physical layer
The Annamaya kosha is the outer, material layer of the human being—the physical body. It consists of muscles, bones, organs, and tissue, and is built up and maintained through food.
Through asanas, conscious movement, and mindful nutrition, this layer is strengthened, kept flexible, and balanced.
Layer: Body
Yoga practice: Asanas, bodywork, relaxation
Pranamaya kosha – The layer of energy
The pranamaya kosha encompasses the life energy (prana) that flows through the body. It is closely connected to the breath and the nervous system and influences vitality, health, and emotional stability.
Breathing exercises and conscious awareness help to harmonize the flow of energy.
Level: Life energy
Yoga practice: Pranayama, breath control
Manomaya kosha – The mental layer
The Manomaya kosha is the layer of thoughts, feelings, and sensory perceptions. It shapes our reactions, habits, and emotional patterns.
Mindfulness, meditation, and conscious movement help to calm the mind and develop emotional balance.
Energy: Mind & Emotions
Yoga practice: Mindfulness, meditation, conscious asana practice
Vijnanamaya kosha – The layer of wisdom
The Vijnanamaya kosha represents knowledge, intuition, and inner wisdom. At this level, we develop clarity, discernment, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and life.
Reflection, self-exploration, and meditative practice promote access to this inner wisdom.
Level: Knowledge & Intuition
Yoga practice: Meditation, self-study, contemplation
Anandamaya kosha – The layer of bliss
Ebene: Tiefe Freude & Verbundenheit
Yoga-Praxis: Meditation, tiefe Entspannung
Yoga as a holistic path
Yoga affects not only the body, but all five koshas. Through regular practice, these levels can be brought into harmony—for better health, inner clarity, and a conscious life.
